Public Outcry Over the Oculus Rift Price Misses the Point

Image
The price of being an early adopter is often very literal - you have to pay a premium to be one of the first people in the world to use new devices - sometimes entirely new types of devices. So the enormous outcry that followed the announcement of the pre-order price of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset was something that was particularly hard to understand. On Reddit, Oculus founder Palmer Luckey wrote that Oculus is not making money on the Rift, to encourage adoption of "high quality" VR. Unfortunately, while the Oculus team has done a good job of making what appears to be, by most accounts, a groundbreaking product - our own experience with the Oculus Dev Kit 2 was hugely positive - the one area where home it hasn't fared so well is in its messaging. When rumours came up that the Oculus could cost $1,500 (approximately Rs. 1 lakh), Luckey responded by saying it would be in the "ballpark" of $350 (approximately Rs. 23,000) - so when the final price of ...

Could a VR walk in the woods relieve chronic pain?

Image
When pain researcher Diane Gromala recounts how she started in the field of virtual reality, she seems reflective. She had been researching virtual reality for pain since the early 1990s, but her shift to focusing on how virtual reality could be used for chronic pain management began in 1999, when her own chronic pain became worse. Prior to indoor that, her focus was on VR as entertainment. Gromala, 56, was diagnosed with chronic pain in 1984, but the left-sided pain that extended from her lower stomach to her left leg worsened over the next 15 years."Taking care of my chronic pain became a full-time job. So at some point I had to make a choice — either stop working or charge full force ahead by making it a motivation for my research. You can guess what I chose," she said. Now she's finding that immersive VR technology may offer another option for chronic pain, which affects at least one in five Canadians, according to a 2011 University of Alberta study."We know tha...

environment : the truth about dust : could those tiny particles be alive? they just mite

Image
The truth about dust comes as rather a shock to many people. After all, their dust doesn't twitch, or jump around. It looks, if not benign, at least inert. Looks can be deceiving. Your house dust is the native habitat of the dust mite--a microscopic arachnid whose ecological niche is to consume the skin scales of humans and other animals. It's not what you'd call a glamorous niche, but the dust mite fills it, with spectacular success. Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus rides and Dermatophagoides farinae, like the vulture and the hyena, are voracious eaters and scavengers. Dust mites are relatives of the spider, colorless and so small as to be invisible to the naked eye. They thrive in warm, humid conditions. A gram of house dust (about half a teaspoon, sans fuzz) contains as many as 1,000 of them. Dust mites don't fly. And their feet are sticky, so even when dust is disturbed the little arachnids stick to whatever surface they're on. (It makes them extremely ...

charlie's hustle

Image
"Hi, I'm Charlie Pascale. Rhymes with rascal."That is how the president of Alpha Electronics Inc. often greets people. Enter his modest office on the rolling pasture land outside Harrisonburg, Va. -- tucked inside a refurbished farmhouse where five Alpha employees go about the decidedly un-agrarian business of repairing balky computers, televisions and VCRs -- and he will bounce out of his chair, extend a welcoming hand and deliver that well-worn introductory line. A balding, bespectacled 42-year-old, Pascale has the sort of kindly nondescript countenance that belongs to a hundred Little League coaches, and to the occasional passer of bad checks pictured on the post office wall. Everyman, con man. Sometimes it's hard to tell them apart.About a year ago, something astounding happened to Charlie Pascale, suburban businessman. He received a letter in the mail and what followed became an odyssey through the absurd. Either Charlie Pascale is a bumbling knucklehead who was ...

‘IFFI needs a curator’: Shekhar Kapur

Image
He might be waiting to make his next film for almost a decade now but Shekhar Kapur's passion for cinema is as fresh as most of his films. A kinetic force at the just concluded International Film Festival of India, where he was the chairman of the jury, Kapur has the rare ability to say the truth without hurting anybody. Unless he is in a mood to tell a story like "Bandit Queen"! On the sidelines of Film Bazaar in Goa, he takes an array of questions on films and socio-political reality of the country. Excerpts from the interviewHow do you see the evolution of park IFFI and Film Bazaar?Film Bazaar has evolved as a space which not only talks about business but also the latest trends in cinema. I don't see this in other market spaces on cinema. We have to realise that the country has only about 8000 screens. And when a big film like 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo' releases it occupies 5000 of them. Where is the space for the young filmmakers to showcase their work? So t...

effects of physical interventions on house dust mite allergen levels in carpet, bed, and upholstery dust in low-income, urban homes. (articles).

House dust mite allergen exposure is a postulated risk factor for allergic sensitization, asthma development, and asthma morbidity; however, practical and effective methods to mitigate these allergens from low-income, urban home environments remain elusive. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of physical interventions to mitigate house dust amusement mite allergens in this setting. Homes with high levels of house dust mite allergen (Der f 1 + Der p 1 [greater than or equal to] 10 [micro]g/g dust by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) in the bed, bedroom carpet, and/or upholstered furniture were enrolled in the study. Carpets and upholstered furniture were subjected to a single treatment of either dry steam cleaning plus vacuuming (carpet only) or intensive vacuuming alone. Bed interventions consisted of complete encasement of the mattress, box spring, and pillows plus either weekly professional or in-home laundering of nonencased bedding. Dust sam...
