Convert your Bedroom into a 5-Star Luxury Hotel Suite

Image
googletag.display("div-ad-articleLeader");Whenever I travel, I like to use Hotwire to find the best deals on 4 and 5-star hotel rooms.  I have been keeping a list of what I like most about these luxury hotel rooms and provide the following guide for turning your own bedroom into a 5-star suite.  In developing this list, I am drawing heavily on the bedroom of the W hotel at Times Square in New York, the technology of the Aria in Las Vegas, and the en suite of the Ritz Carleton in Hong Kong.  The best part of following this guide is that you will not need to steal the bathrobe amusement upon checkout! The BedroomGeneral DecorI love the clean design of the bedroom at the W Hotel in Times Square.  It always feels fresh and the vibe is incredibly hip.  The design is best described as a minimalist chic.  To convert your bedroom: Walls - The paint is a neutral taupe.  In the picture above, the HEX code is A8A385.  The cost of 2 cans of paint plus all supplies (brushes, tape, paint...

SCENE; Muscle-Boat Madness: Revving Up and Peeling Out

Image
By JULIA CHAPLINAUG. 5, 2001IT had all the trappings of a low-rider showdown: jacked-up sound systems, revving engines and billowing clouds of exhaust smoke. But instead of taking place late at night in a deserted parking lot, it was happening last Sunday afternoon in the water outside Claudio's clam bar and wharf in Greenport, on the North Fork of Long Island. All eyes were trained on a blue-and-yellow 30-foot muscle boat called Pussy Cat as it pulled away from the entertainment dock with the roar of a tsunami. ''Yeah, dude! Peel out!'' someone yelled. The captain, wearing shades and a sunburn, nodded to his bikini-clad entourage. He pulled the gear shift down and gunned the craft out to sea. The crowd cheered. A cover band launched into Bad Company's ''Feel Like Makin' Love. ''The testosterone ritual would replay again and again until sundown, except the boats would have different accessories and different names: Promiscuous, Heat Wave, Hot...

Candy-like laundry pods pose poisoning threat to kids, doctors warn

Image
Laundry detergent pods have quickly become a serious poisoning threat to young children, causing thousands of American kids to vomit, choke or suffer more serious symptoms since the products went on sale in the U.S. in early 2012, a new study warns. At least 769 children younger than 6 were hospitalized in 2012 and 2013 after ingesting or handling laundry pods, which have appealing designs that resemble large pieces of candy. At least one infant -- a 7-month-old boy from Kissimmee, Fla. -- died as a result of laundry pod exposure. Altogether, more than 17,230 young children have had potentially toxic encounters with laundry pods, and more than one-third of them required treatment at medical facilities, researchers found. That works out to 3.67 cases for every 10,000 U.S. children younger than 6. The data, published Monday by the journal Pediatrics, come from the National Poison Data System , which tallies information on keyboard calls made to poison control centers throughout th...

our heavenly, humble human hand

Image
They have one of the most enormous jobs in our body, so when one doesn't work, it is complicated to make a new one, writes Lana Hart. They are always there: waiting, responsive, available to do our bidding whenever we want. They caress and tap and grasp at our command. They are designed to be stronger than they look and can convey some of the deepest of human emotions. A gesture of one can change the meaning of our very words or cause the most severe of offence. Only primates have them. Most of us have two. When they don't work properly or are injured, it profoundly changes our world. Of all the incredible organs in the human body, our hands have one of the most enormous jobs. We need their many abilities in nearly everything we do - work, eat, show emotions, create and fix things, communicate, clean ourselves. Our understanding of these loyal appendages is fairly patchy. Did you know that your fingers have no muscles? Or that – so complex are our many hand movements - th...

Consumer Agency Tightens Scrutiny of Baby Sleep Products

Image
By ANDREW MARTINJAN. 31, 2011Three years ago, Dr. Bradley Thach, a professor of pediatrics at Washington University in St. Louis, published findings that had the po tent ial to upend nurseries across the nation, and perhaps save some lives too.In reviewing data from the Consumer Products Safety Commission, Dr. Thach concluded that crib bumpers — the padding wrapped around the inside of a crib that often matches the bedding—were killing babies. In a 10-year period beginning in 1995, he found 27 suffocation deaths involving bumper pads, and he theorized that many more might have occurred because of inconsistencies in the data."Because bumpers can cause death, we conclude that they should not be used," he warned. The Consumer Products Safety Commission initially ignored the findings. Last summer, it reached the same conclusion as a trade group representing product manufacturers, which asserted that other factors, like a crib crowded with pillows or babies sleeping on th...

Mattress Frenzy: The Hottest Startup Industry Of The Year?

Image
This year has been a breakout year for one of humanity's oldest consumer goods - the mattress. In retrospect, the industry was ripe for disruption. Most mattresses are made by two companies (Tempurpedic/Sealy and Serta/Simmons), resulting in a mattress market that ended up driving prices unnecessarily high for shoppers. Enter the mattress startup, which sells only through its own website to cut out many of the middle-men and pass on huge savings to the consumer. To give you an idea of how much people love the idea, Casper Sleep launched last April and has grown at such a rapid rate that it just raised $55 million from investors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. Though Casper is the largest of the mattress startups, a number of other companies have wooden launched to give consumers some great options when mattress shopping online. At this point these brands all have something unique to offer, and as a result collectively will continue to take away market share ...

Cloudfone Thrill 430x Review

Image
DAT BATT I first stumbled upon the Cloudfone Thrill 430x when someone opened a thread in TipidCP and stated that it had a 4160 mAh battery. I found it hard to believe, but they immediately posted pictures of the device much to everyone's delight and mine. It really was a 4160 mAh battery, and a rather fat one at that. Nevertheless, the prospects of such a large battery was droolworthy. Nevermind the recent releases of Cherry Mobile's Flare and Titan to much fanfare. What's a smartphone without a big battery? And the Flare certainly had a small battery while the Titan's battery is big and easily lasted more than a day of heavy use, the large 2350 mAh battery was small next to the Thrill 430x's 4160 mAh battery. It was numbers game. If anyone is aware what a big-ass battery can let you do, take a look at the battery tests of Motorola's DROID RAZR MAXX which has a 3300 mAh battery. The results are impressive, easily lasting nearly twice as long as the nearest c...

diy vacuum robot

Image
This is my first Vacuum Robot, which it's main purpose is to allow anyone to have a cleaning robot without paying so much money, to learn how they work, to build a nice robot that you can modify, update and program as much as you want, and of course arcade to vacuum all that annoying fluff. This project is intended to be as easy to build as possible since all the elements and parts are easy to find on Digikey, eBay, Amazon, etc.The whole chassis was designed in Solidworks so that it could be 3d printed. Currently it uses an Arduino Uno (if you don't like it too much you can easily change it for another micro controller, I decided to use this since my objective is that anyone could actually build it), micro-metal motors, fan propeller, infrared sensors and respective driver modules.Another one bites the dust! So, first I will define all the materials that I used and later I will suggest other options with a similar behavior.Controllers:Actuators:Sensors:Power:3d Printing:Other m...

Disasters happen. That’s why you should have a home inventory.

Image
With floods, fires, tornadoes, superstorms and even cranes toppling onto apartment buildings, no home is completely safe from natural or man-made disasters. Although many of us are prepared to either stick it out with emergency supplies or evacuate to safer locales, only 44 percent of homeowners have inventoried their belongings. Most of us can't recall what we had for lunch yesterday, much less what's stored in our kitchen drawers. That's why a home inventory is so important. In the event of a claim, insurers require you to substantiate your loss in as much detail as possible. "The last thing most of us want to do is spend a weekend documenting all our stuff. But almost as heartbreaking as losing a home to a disaster is trying to re-create a home inventory after the fact," says Carole Walker, executive director of the equipment Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association. Before starting your inventory, contact your insurance agent. Ask what sort of documen...

design ideas for a powder room that will wow guests

Image
The powder room is the hummingbird of the home: a room so small you may wonder whether it's a room at all. (There's a reason real estate agents call it a half bathroom.) No matter how diminutive, though, it's a space that can be used to create an outsize design statement. "A powder room is a perfect opportunity to get a bit crazy,'' said Paris Forino, an interior designer in New York City. "We look at the powder room as a little jewel box, a little wow factor, and somewhere you can impress your guests. You can be bold, because it's not a space where you have to worry about getting sick of computer something. '' Dark, saturated colors and large-scale patterns that might seem overwhelming in a living room or bedroom are often ideal for a powder room. And you can use high-end materials that might be too expensive to install in larger spaces, said interior designer Katie Ridder, because "there isn't a lot of floor and there isn't a l...
